  • Thomas HARVEY

  • Sex:

  • Male

  • Father:

  • Thomas HARVEY (1790-1858)

  • Mother:

  • Cause of Death:

  • Suicide by hanging, following murder of his mother

  • Note:

  • See report of the murder of his mother Ann Harvey (nee Jacob).

After the death his father, Thomas, who for some years had run the Plough Inn, Thomas lived nearby (in Green End) together with his wife and 9 children.

There was dispute between Thomas, the eldest son, and the remainder of the family over some land that the father had left to be distributed after his wife's death, between his children, apart from Thomas, who apparently had some special arrangement (unknown). Thomas apparently forcibly took possession of part of the disputed land.

Although Thomas was, by 1861, a married man of about 40 working as a carpenter, the dispute boiled over and he burst into his mother's house and killed her with hammer blows and then made good his escape. he was found the next day hanged from a tree in the orchard that had been at the centre of the family dispute.

Note on Husband: Thomas HARVEY

See report of the murder of his mother Ann Harvey (nee Jacob).

Note on Wife: Ann WOLF

In 1841 she was working as a Domestic Servant to Farmer Mole (plus wife, sister and six children) in High Street Cottisham. The men servants and farm labourers lived at the same address.

She appears to have married Thomas early in the 1840s.

After Thomas died she appears to have turned to market gardening. The remaining boys are all agricultural labourers; Elizabeth is a dressmaker.
