  • Cause of Death:

  • Note:

  • See report of her murder [Chronicle 1861].

After the death of her husband, Thomas, in 1857, who for some years had run the Plough Inn, Ann lived nearby (in Church Street) together with a Lodger, Mary Ann Witt, aged 70 in 1861, who was a Dressmaker, born in Maidstone, Kent. She also had a Lodger, Shadrach Jacob, aged 72 in 1861, her brother. He was also born in Chesterton, like Ann. He was a retired Grocer.

(Mary Ann Witt had earlier been a lodger in the same house as Ann's son Richard in London. She was a widow in 1851 with two sons (?), William (22) a tailor and Charles (18) a decorator.)

There was dispute between the eldest son, Thomas, and the remainder of the family over some land that the father had left to be distributed between his children, apart from Thomas, who apparently had some special arrangement (unknown). Although Thomas was, by 1861, a married man of about 40 with 9 children and working as a carpenter, the dispute boiled over and he burst into his mother's house and killed her with hammer blows and then made good his escape. he was found the next day hanged from a tree in the orchard that had been at the centre of the family dispute.

By 1861 Anne Canham, whose parents are both deceased and her brother and sister also probably deceased, is living with her Uncle, having previously lived with her Grandparents in Fen Ditton. She presumably moved to London after the murder of her grandmother in Fen Ditton. She has no recorded employment at that time.

1871. Walter John (7) and Percy Carter (3) have arrived.

Harry Coard (6) who was born in Calcutta and is given as a British Subject.

They also have a servant, Ellen Cranston (25). Sydney Harry Coard, who would be now 16, is not living with them.3

Note on Husband: Thomas HARVEY

Witnesses at the wedding were Jonathan Jacob (her brother) and William Harvey (his brother).

In 1851 census he and his wife are living at Greenend, Fen Ditton, aged 61 and 59, respectively. He is given as a Bricklayer, but apparently he also ran the The Plough Inn and owned some land nearby.

He left his property to his wife in his Will but there was an arrangement to split the proceeds from the sale of the land between 8 of his children on her death, with his oldest son, Thomas, being subject to a 'special provison' (unknown).

In 1851 Ann and William Canham, grandchildren, are living with them, both of their parents having died.

Note on Wife: Ann JACOBS

See report of her murder [Chronicle 1861].
