3 | See report of her murder [Chronicle 1861]. After the death of her husband, Thomas, in 1857, who for some years had run the Plough Inn, Ann lived nearby (in Church Street) together with a Lodger, Mary Ann Witt, aged 70 in 1861, who was a Dressmaker, born in Maidstone, Kent. She also had a Lodger, Shadrach Jacob, aged 72 in 1861, her brother. He was also born in Chesterton, like Ann. He was a retired Grocer. (Mary Ann Witt had earlier been a lodger in the same house as Ann's son Richard in London. She was a widow in 1851 with two sons (?), William (22) a tailor and Charles (18) a decorator.) There was dispute between the eldest son, Thomas, and the remainder of the family over some land that the father had left to be distributed between his children, apart from Thomas, who apparently had some special arrangement (unknown). Although Thomas was, by 1861, a married man of about 40 with 9 children and working as a carpenter, the dispute boiled over and he burst into his mother's house and killed her with hammer blows and then made good his escape. he was found the next day hanged from a tree in the orchard that had been at the centre of the family dispute. | JACOBS, Ann (I366747788)

16 | In 1891 he was sent back from India to England to live with his Uncle Richard. In 1901 he is found as a student at a boy's boarding school, Laleham, in Margate, Kent, aged 16. He apparently travelled to India from time to time with his mother to their second home there, where the father worked. His Uncle, Arthur Rumney Coard and Aunt Augusta Bathurst Coard both had Indian connections - Arthur's son, Charles Arthur (born there in 1891 (Royal Street Calcutta) and died in Torquay in 1963): His aunt Augusta married a Francis Newman (who was born in Colombo and was later described as a 'Director of Companies') and they had four children, at least one born in India. Her fourth child, Augusta Bathurst Newman maried a John A. Skinner, a lawyer, but their two children both kept the name Newman. One of them, Hilary Francis Cleveland Newman was killed on the Somme in 1916. John A. Skinner was a USA Divisional Judge in Indiana (Brit. Subj.) in 1901. | COARD, Sydney Harvey (I366748075)

37 | 1851 - Interestingly, one of his fellow lodgers is Mary Ann Witt, aged 60, a widow with two children who is next found living as a companion to his mother in 1861, after the death of Thomas Harvey. Mary Ann was a witness to his mother's murder and was severely injured in the attack. By 1861 Anne Canham, whose parents are both deceased and her brother and sister also probably deceased, is living with her Uncle, having previously lived with her Grandparents in Fen Ditton. She presumably moved to London after the murder of her grandmother in Fen Ditton. She has no recorded employment at that time. 1871. Walter John (7) and Percy Carter (3) have arrived. Harry Coard (6) who was born in Calcutta and is given as a British Subject. By 1901 Richard is now 78 and Louisa has died. He is given as a Tailor/Employer. Living at home are Louisa M. (47), Adeline S. (42), Percy C. (33), Arthur Frederick Harvey (6) grandson, born in Hornsey. The latter might well be the son of Walter who is given as a Widower, living in Worcester at this time. They also have a servant, Ellen Cranston (25). Sydney Harry Coard, who would be now 16, is not living with them. | HARVEY, Richard Sturges (I366747791)
|
38 | 1861 His wife, Rebecca, possibly already ran the Lodging House, as she is given in the census as 'Lodging House Keeper'. There was also a servant (Ruth parker (17) who was also from the same place as Rebecca and also a Lodger, Theodore N. Flintoff who is given as 'BA Emmanuel College' (23) from 'Bares' Surrey. He looks like the same person who joined Woodbury Hill Reformatory School for Boys in Worcetershire; going on to run it as Chaplain and manager until 1896. | HARVEY, William (I366747797)
