• Notes

  In 1891 he was sent back from India to England to live with his Uncle Richard. In 1901 he is found as a student at a boy's boarding school, Laleham, in Margate, Kent, aged 16. He apparently travelled to India from time to time with his mother to their second home there, where the father worked. His Uncle, Arthur Rumney Coard and Aunt Augusta Bathurst Coard both had Indian connections - Arthur's son, Charles Arthur (born there in 1891 (Royal Street Calcutta) and died in Torquay in 1963): His aunt Augusta married a Francis Newman (who was born in Colombo and was later described as a 'Director of Companies') and they had four children, at least one born in India. Her fourth child, Augusta Bathurst Newman maried a John A. Skinner, a lawyer, but their two children both kept the name Newman. One of them, Hilary Francis Cleveland Newman was killed on the Somme in 1916. John A. Skinner was a USA Divisional Judge in Indiana (Brit. Subj.) in 1901. [2]
